The Complete Guide to Podcast Loudness Standards (LUFS)

Mastering for podcasting differs fundamentally from mastering music. In podcasting, speech intelligibility, dynamic range control, and listener comfort across noisy environments (cars, headphones, public transport) take precedence over aggressive peak limiting.

What is LUFS?

LUFS (Loudness Units relative to Full Scale) is an international measurement standard (ITU-R BS.1770) that calculates the perceived volume of audio as heard by the human ear. Unlike traditional peak meters (dBFS) that only detect the loudest instantaneous transient, LUFS measures loudness integrated across the entirety of your episode.

Platform Loudness Reference Matrix

Platform / StandardTarget Integrated LoudnessMaximum True PeakNormalization Behavior
Apple Podcasts-16.0 LUFS (±1.0)-1.0 dB True PeakUses Sound Check. Normalizes around -16 LUFS. Does not compress audio.
Spotify-14.0 LUFS-1.0 dB True PeakNormalizes audio to -14 LUFS. Louder tracks are turned down; quieter tracks are limited.
AES TD1004.1 (Standard)-16 LUFS (Stereo) / -19 LUFS (Mono)-1.0 dB True PeakThe official Audio Engineering Society global broadcast standard for speech.
YouTube Music-14.0 LUFS-1.0 dB True PeakApplies strict attenuation if loudness exceeds -14 LUFS.
Amazon Music-14.0 LUFS-2.0 dB True PeakConservative ceiling to eliminate inter-sample clipping during lossy transcoding.

Why You Should Never Master Above -14 LUFS

Some novice audio creators believe that “louder is better” and master their shows to -11 or -9 LUFS (like commercial pop music). On streaming platforms, this causes two severe issues:

  1. Loudness Penalty: The platform will immediately attenuate your show by -3 to -5 dB to match its standard playback volume.
  2. Inter-Sample Clipping: When high-level audio is transcoded to lossy AAC or MP3 formats, digital reconstruction peaks can exceed 0 dBFS, introducing harsh digital distortion and crackle on mobile earbuds.
